The original hot hatch returns: Sixth generation GTI

Content - Original

The Golf GTI is back.  Almost 36 years to the day since a small band of engineers started work on the first prototype GTI, the very latest evolution and sixth generation of the original hot hatch has been opened for ordering at Volkswagen Retailers.

The elements identified by the engineers back in March 1973 that defined the original GTI remain; sharp dynamics, a responsive four-cylinder engine and driver involvement are at the core of the new GTI.  Yet it has evolved – the Mk VI Golf GTI is faster, sharper and more powerful than any standard GTI before it.  However, the day-to-day usability of the GTI has not been forgotten and it is cleaner, safer and more efficient than ever before.

An advanced new 2.0-litre TSI engine, available liked to either a sx-speed manual or DSG gearbox, is at the heart of the new GTI.  Although sharing the same 1,984 cc displacement as the 2.0-litre T-FSI engine it replaces, the new TSI unit features substantial changes including modified pistons and piston rings, an improved oil pump, new induction system and a high-pressure fuel pump.

The result is an output of 210 PS delivered between 5,300 and 6,200 rpm (a 10 PS rise over the Mk V), which allows the vehicle to accelerate from standstill to 62 mph in 6.9 seconds, while emissions fall from 189 g/km to 170 g/km (DSG: 173 g/km) and economy rises from a combined 35.3 mpg to 38.7 mpg (DSG: 38.2 mpg).  The torque – 206 lbs ft between 1,700 and 5,200 rpm – is also delivered slightly lower in the rev range allowing greater flexibility and keener throttle response. The maximum speed rises to 149 mph.

Despite the rise in power output, the new GTI is assured of greater traction in all conditions thanks to a standard new XDS electronically controlled differential.  A series of sensors detects when, through hard cornering for instance, the inside wheel is not sufficiently loaded and applies braking pressure via the Electronic Stabilisation Programme (ESP) in order to restore traction.  The result is less wheelspin and greater control and precision on demanding roads.

Maintaining the sharp responses expected of the GTI are unique springs and dampers linked to a ride height lowered by 22 mm at the front and 15 mm at the rear.  The strut-type front and multi-link rear suspension is joined by new anti-roll bars to provide sharper responses.  In addition, Volkswagen’s innovative Adaptive Chassis Control system (ACC), featuring pneumatically controlled damper units, is offered for the first time on the GTI.  This allows the driver to select from normal, comfort or sport modes to define the desired suspension, steering and accelerator response settings for any particular journey.

The mechanical changes are joined by subtle cosmetic additions.  The basis of the GTI is the chassis structure of the new Mk VI Golf, onto which is added an aggressive new front bumper.  This features a deep honeycomb airdam framed by vertical foglights which sit below a new grille element adorned by the now iconic GTI badge.  As with the Mk VI Golf, the GTI uses horizontal lines to make the new car appear lower and wider than it really is.  In reality, the new GTI is 27 mm wider than the car it replaces.

At the rear, a diffuser is located between an all-new exhaust system with separated tailpipes to lower further the stance of the car.  A subtle rear wing sits above a pair of smoked rear light lenses and a single ‘GTI’ badge.

Standard equipment highlights on the new GTI include red and black tartan sports seats with red stitching and headrests featuring the ‘GTI’ logo, a flat-bottomed GTI multifunction steering wheel, red brake callipers, 17-inch ‘Monza’ alloy wheels and 2Zone electronic climate control.  Also, as with the entire Golf range, the new GTI features class-leading levels of safety with ABS, ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme) and seven airbags, including for the first time a knee airbag, all as standard.  The Golf was recently awarded a maximum five-star rating by the EuroNCAP crash testing agency.

The new GTI can be ordered from today at Volkswagen Retailers with the first cars ready to drive away on the car’s on sale date, 22nd May.

Impressive Gti
written by Simon Garette, September 11, 2009
I have had a chance to drive the VW GTI. I have to say that I was impressed with this car. I drove the DSG equipped car and I liked the lightning quick shifts and the shift paddles. I drove the 2006 GTI and it is the only car in its price range that has this transmission. I like that it doesn’t have the power sucking torque converter which makes it seem a lot more powerful than it actually is. The automated manual gearbox also has 6 speeds, which is more than you will usually find in an automatic in a car in this price range.

The interior is all business. The seats are nice and supportive with good side bolstering. The steering wheel has a flat bottom for easier entry and exit. Also the steering wheel mounted paddles are nice too. Other than that there isn’t anything fancy in the interior.

One of my favorite things in the car was the sound of the blow off valve every time you change the gear. The suspension setup was excellent too. It was sporty and the car handles very well while it is not punishing by any means. I also think that the car looks great. With the DSG transmission this car is really fun to drive and definitely worth the money.

The GTi is it
written by Adam Thorpe, September 21, 2009
I have owned a VW GTi since April of 2008, and in almost every way it has exceeded my expectations - performance, handling, civility, and general ownership. I am a "VW person" and got the GTi after trading in my previous Jetta sedan. Despite being a 2-door, the GTi is exceedingly practical due to its hatch and available storage space. The motor, a 2-liter turbo, is sporty if not properly fast, and combined with the terrific suspension and fantastic 6-speed transmission makes it a great way to drive to work. In 15,000 miles I have had not a single problem, and perhaps signaling a new day for Volkswagen, have yet to notice any substantial rattles either. The interior quality and dash are predictably fantastic, and fit and finish is doubtless the best for a car in this price range. For the young professional who wants a standout car without standing out, the GTi is it.

One word: Fun!
written by Stig II, October 13, 2009
If there was one word to describe how the Golf GTi MkV handles, its FUN !Anybody looking for a pure driving pleasure in a Hot Hatch need not go anywhere else,I got my Golf on my 20th Birthday, i have aged since then , this baby has just gotten better. The Xenon Lighting are a standard feature and really brings the best out of night driving, mind you ,it makes driving a lot safer. The sporty Steering wheel is the first thing that grabs your attention, but its what lies beneath that really steals the show, VW's latest offering is the 4 Cylinder 2.0 FSI Engine makes enough torque to make The Stig take notice, coupled with nearly 200 Horses under the Hood, you have a mean machine right here.

A good car
written by lena, October 21, 2009
Luckily my first car was this GTI. The most important thing about this car I believe is its safety and the fact that it is very roomy. Even I am tall and I need to push my seat back that does not make other sitting in the back feel uncomfortable because of its space. The thing I don’t really like is that when u start the engine it does not go very fast, because it needs some time to increase the speed and can not do it immediately.
Its engine I believe it is really good and it is designed for long run… In addition, I would like to emphasize that the design inside is very good. Not luxury and same time does not look cheap. Also, the seats are made from a really good material. They do not make you sweat or feel uncomfortable.
The thing I was not very satisfied were its expensive parts, at least to my low budget. And I found it difficult to find and replace them.
People who want a car that does not make lot of expenses, this is a perfect choice.
